Philip was a son of Sarah E. Billingsley Hefling. His father is unknown, however it was not Fielding Hefling, Sr. He was a carpenter (and later a "builder of new buildings") and in the 1860 census, was living at the Speck Hotel at Tippecanoe, Harrison Co., Ohio with his brother, Dey. He married in Tuscarawas Co., Ohio, in 1865, to Miss Mary Adaline "Addie" Stewart. They had one daughter, Lily. Philip was in a mercantile business in Westchester, Tuscarawas Co., Ohio with his father-in-law in November of 1866, and owned a tannery in Tippecanoe with his older brother, Dey, which he sold rather hurriedly in 1869 in the midst of his divorce, which Addie filed in April of that year. Philip left the area after his divorce and ended up in Philadelphia where he remarried on January 5, 1875 to Lavinia C. Knox (a daughter of William and Mary Knox of Philadelphia). Records indicate he was a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in Francisville, PA. He died on Monday, April 1, 1918. Lavinia was still living in Philadelphia in 1920 and ran a boarding house there. She died at Episcopal Hospital, Philadelphia, March 19, 1927.
