Youngest child of Fielding Hefling and Sarah Elizabeth Billingsley, Dey was born four months after his father's early death. As a young man, he worked with his brother, Kirk, as a carpenter and in the 1860 Federal Census he lived with his brother, Fielding, at the Speck boarding house at Tippecanoe where he co-owned a tannery with his brother, which they sold in 1869. He attended the Eclectic Medical College at Philadelphia, Pa., and read medicine back at home with Dr. Saint Clair Streett - his future brother-in-law. Dey married April 2, 1863 to Miss Mary Boals McConnell. They had five children of whom three lived to adulthood: Ida May, Cora Dell, and Herman Clyde. Dey was a physician and chemist at Peoli (when it was Newtown), Gilmore, and later in New Philadelphia. He was part owner of a flour mill in New Philadelphia, part owner and board member of a local railway, and part owner of a newspaper as well. He served as medical advisor to the Children's Home and the County Home. He was elected the Tuscarawas Co. Sheriff when the family were residing at Gilmore where he had been heavily involved in Democratic politics for many years. It was a position he held between 1898-1902. Dey was the caretaker of his family over several generations and a man of great integrity. He died at the family home, having suffered a nervous breakdown after the death of his beloved wife. At that time, he was nearly blind. For some reason, none of the family had monuments - until the one pictured here was placed in 1998.
