Manty was the only child of George Robison and Sarah Elizabeth Billingsley Hefling - she had six half-siblings: Chalkley Hefling, Lindley Hefling, Volumnia Hefling Streett, Lycergus Hefling, Darius Hefling, and Philip Hefling. She married in 1882 as the second wife of James Carrothers. They lived on a farm between Tippecanoe and Deersville where Jim owned over 500 acres, although she owned property in her own right. Manty cared for her father in her home until his death. She and Jim had no children, although he had three daughters from his first marriage. Manty's monument shows "Cementi" as her middle name because her husband called her "Samanty" her entire married life, and, being unable to read or write, that's what he told the salesman.
