One of four sons of Fielding Hefling and Sarah Elizabeth Billingsley, he married in 1860 (Brownsville, Harrison Co., Ohio) to Miss Mary Kennedy of Deersville. He was a carpenter with his brother, Dey, for a time, and attended Duff's College - an accounting school in Pittsburgh. The family moved to Sharon, Pa. in 1864 and then to Mercer. Kirk was a banker and at one time, co-owned the banking firm of "Zahniser and Hefling" in Mercer. He was the father of four children - Maud, Lulu, Cora (Stright), and Marcey Kennedy. He died at home after being bedridden for nearly ten years - the causes being asthma and a weakened heart. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church.
