Second son and child of Fielding Hefling and Sarah E. Billingsley. After his father died, he and his older brother, Chalkley, were responsible for the family until their mother remarried. He married Elizabeth Gardner in Harrison Co., Ohio, on August 20, 1846, and he taught school and farmed at Deersville. He moved the family to a farm in section 2 of Empire twp., LeRoy, Illinois in 1855, where he bought two different farms. He was the father of nine children; five who lived to adulthood.(It is interesting to note that his mother-in-law married for the second time to Lindley's grandfather, John Hefling, in Harrison County, Ohio.)
