Enoch was born the son of Edmund Hendley Richards Jr. and Nancy Jane Warner on the family farm in Macoupin County Illinois, east of Palmyra. His namesake was his uncle, Enoch Stewart Richards [1807 VA], who had farmed and died in 1839 in the same township in Macoupin County. Their middle names derived from their great grandmother's maiden name. Edward Richards [1731] MD/VA, and wife Elizabeth Hendley STEWART [1742], owned and operated a plantation 6.4 miles south east of Rocky Mount Virginia.

MARRIAGE
He married Elizabeth Anne "Eliza" Moore on 4 August 1860 in Macoupin County IL by Andrew A Atkins, Justice of Peace. Her parents were Alexander Moore born c1816 in New Castle Delaware and Mary Nevins who was born c1820 in Overton Tennessee and died 1853-60. They married on October 20 1836 in Macoupin County IL.

MILITARY
Enoch served two tours of duty during the Civil War with Company "E" 122nd Illinois Infantry, which included other Richards young men from Macoupin County. Though I have no photo of Enoch, a description is given in his Civil War record:
22 years old
5'5.5", auburn hair
blue eyes, fair complexion
Both tours were voluntary. He attained the rank of Corporal, but received a disabling injury in the line of duty, and asked to be reduced to ranks [a private].

A NEW BEGINNING
Following the war he settled his family in the town of Palmer of Bear Creek Township in Christian County IL [only about 28 miles to the east of his birthplace] and was a Druggist there in the 1870 census.

CHILDREN:
1. Mary V. [1861] +John Titus Stone
2. Luelfa [1864] +Hattie B. Norvell
3. Nancy Luellen [1867] +Luther F. Plain
4. Edmond C. [1870] +Lillie Mae Borum
5. Edmond Alexander [1871] +Nora Barrow

PASSING ON
Enoch's life was cut short in 1873 [I do not know the cause of death], leaving his wife and four children behind.

After Enoch's death, Elizabeth brought the children back to Macoupin Co to be near family and support. Whether she remarried and who, and where she ended her life and was buried; is a mystery thus far.

HGR---a grateful descendant.
