Loos, Mathias (Dec. 27, 1853-Feb. 5, 1923 –husband of Theresa Moerchen [married May 14, 1878 at St. Gregory Catholic Church in St. Nazianz, Town of Eaton] –son of Mathias Loos and Mary Mueller –born New York –farmer –in 1881, Mathias purchased the farm of his father in the Town of Schleswig –at the farm he constructed a bowling alley and carved balls of wood to serve as bowling balls –neighbors would come on Sunday afternoons to play games of bowling –in 1906, Mathias sold his Town of Schleswig farm to his son-in-law Peter Smasal –from Aug. 23, 1892 to March 4, 1902 owed the 80 acre former Michael Strassmann farm in the N1/2 of the NW1/4 of Section 16, Town of Schleswig –Mathias and his wife Theresa moved to St. Nazianz where they operated a saloon –on July 21, 1905 Mathias and Theresa purchased the saloon at 106 South Second Avenue in St. Nazianz –they ran this establishment until selling on Feb. 7, 1920, after which they moved to Aniwa, Shawano County –it was here that Theresa died on Oct. 25, 1920 –the widowed Mathias then moved back to the St. Nazianz area to live with his daughter and son-in-law Peter Smasal –died from “chronic myocarditis” –“Mr. Loos was working in a nearby woods through the day and was in apparent good health. KIEL PIONEER DIES SUDDENLY, HEART ATTACK
Funeral services were held at St. Nazianz today for Math Loos, old resident of the village whose death occurred suddenly as result of a heart attack.

Mr. Loos, who was 70 years of age, had been assisting with some work near the farm of his son-in-law Peter Smasal and was returning to the home late in the afternoon when he suffered the fatal attack. Members of the family found the body of Mr. Loos twenty feet from the house when they made search when he did not return home.

Mr. Loos was born in New York over 70 years ago. He was married in 1878 and the family lived on a farm near Kiel 34 years before they came to St. Nazianz to make their home about 13 years ago. For the past two years he resided with Mr. and Mrs. P. Smasal. Mrs. Loos died in 1921.

Ten children survive as follows: Mrs. P. Smasal, near here, Mrs. Tom McCarty of Sheboygan, Mrs. John Mertz of Chilton, Mrs. Jos Baumgartner and Mrs. Geo. Loessl of this village, Math and Frank Loos of Aniwa, Conrad of Greenwood, Herman of Valders, and Albert of Sheboygan. Also one sister Mrs. Herman Lulloff, and 29 grandchildren.
