Eloise Gage Delong was born 1918 the only surviving daughter of JV Gage & Leah Nicholson. She grew up at La Cache plantation near Port Gibson. MS. Her mother died when she was 6 years old and she was raised by her Aunt Eloise Nicholson ,dad, brothers and a nanny she called Mammy.
In 1928, Her dad remarried to Gladys Virginia Sandifer, known as Mimi. Eloise graduated as Salutatorian (2nd in her class) in 1936. This was at the same time their beloved home burned from a chimney fire to the ground.her father would not tell her til after graduation Then they moved to town and her father went to work at the family Port Gibson National Bank .
In 1936 She relocated to Houston, TX where her brothers Doug & John Gage already had moved. they all lived in the same boarding house in midtown houston.She graduated from Massey Business College, and married LT. Charles Wallace Atkinson in 1945. They had 2 daughters, Leah & Clare .
In 1952 a great tragedy occurred, Charles was hit and killed on purpose by a drunk driver while surveying in Houston. MURDER BY AUTO was the headline in Houston Chronicle.Unheard of in those days.She was greatly helped by her father in law . Edward Spear (Ted)Atkinson II. until She gained employment as Executive Secretary for Robert H. Ray Co. which later became Petty Ray and later Halliburton.
She remarried in 1956 to Charles G. DeLong, a widower with a young son Tommy. They were happily married until she passed away from breast cancer in 2002. It was the same disease that claimed her mother in 1926. Her second Daughter Claire Atkinson Johnson died in 2006.She was beloved and still is. has 4 grandchildren,Kim & Shannon DeLong, Johnny & Frank Girard, and 11+ great-grandchildren. and 3 great great grandchildren . A very Strong proud woman from the Mississippi deep south who overcame many obstacles and had a Gage smile to light up the skies. rest in peace mama ,love Leah
