Alex W. Bloms, 94, Minot and formerly of Glenburn, died Tuesday, April 29, 2003 in a Minot healthcare facility.

Alex was born in Muskego Township, Renville County, in rural Foxholm, ND on January 21, 1909 to William and Matilda (Keller) Bloms. He was raised on the family farm near Foxholm where he attended rural school and was a member of St. Henry's Catholic Church. He started working at the Parker Buffalo Ranch at age 14 to help provide for a family of 9 children. At the age of 16, he started farming with his older brother Frank.

He married Clara Koll on June 27, 1939 at St. Philomena Catholic Church in Glenburn, ND. They farmed west of Glenburn until November 1943 when they purchased the Dick Barrett farm east of Glenburn. Besides farming, they were custom harvesters for 10 years working from Oklahoma to North Dakota. Alex remained active in farming until retiring at age 80 when his son Richard took over the farming operation. In 1990 they received the Renville County Soil Conservation District award.

Alex served 32 years on the Prescott Township Board as supervisor. He served on the Mouse River Park board, the P.C.A. board, and with the Irrigation Committee of Towner. He was a former member of the Eagles, Knights of Columbus and the Moose Lodge. He remained a member of St. Philomena Catholic Church in Glenburn since 1939, serving on the building board and three years on the church council.

His hobbies were hunting, fishing, playing cards, going to auctions and he always enjoyed having visits from his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He always had a smile on his face and when asked how he was doing, he would say "Hangin' in there!" Alex attributed his long life to oatmeal and Copenhagen. Alex and Clara loved to travel and meet new people. A highlight of their marriage was a church pilgrimage to France, Germany and Italy. They spent three winters in Mesa, AZ and one in Las Vegas, NV and enjoyed visiting friends and relatives in California, Montana and Canada. Clara passed away March 3, 2000.
