Lester A. Mathes Sr., 66, of R. 1, New Holstein, died Monday afternoon at his home of an apparent heart attack.

A lifelong resident of the New Holstein area, he was born on July 11, 1907, in Town of Schleswig (Manitowoc County) a son of the late William and Martha Suhr Mathes. He attended Schleswig schools. On May 24, 1933, he married Selma Jochimsen in Kiel. He was a member of the Kiel Redmen Lodge 49 and the 24 Hour Club, also of Kiel.

Surviving are his widow; three son, Lester Jr. of New Holstein, Karl of Chilton and Dennis at home; three daughters, Mrs. Edward (Betty) Groh of Campbellsport, Mrs. Roger (Bonnie) Kind of Random Lake and Candy at home; 17 grandchildren; a brother, Rueben of Kiel, and four sisters, Mrs. Clarence Strassmann and Mrs. Raymond Hass of New Holstein, Mrs. Norman Gutchow of Kiel and Mrs. Alfred Wollersheim of Manitowoc.

Funeral services will be at the Erbe-Evjen Funeral Home, New Holstein, the Rev. Albert K. Borns, pastor of St. John United Church of Christ, New Holstein, officiating. Burial will be in New Holstein City Cemetery.
