Mrs. Martha Mathes, 87, of New Holstein, died early this morning at an Oshkosh Hospital. She had been in ill health for the past five months.
The former Martha Suhr was born in the Town of Schleswig July 17, 1875, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Gerhard Suhr. She received her education at the Rockville district schools and the Kiel High School.
She was married Aug. 11, 1896, to William Mathes, Town of Rhine. The couple farmed near Kiel after their marriage and moved to New Holstein 30 years ago. Her husband died in August of 1945. Mrs. Mathes was a member of St. Peter United Church of Christ, Kiel.
Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Arthur (Lydia) Dedering, Kiel, Mrs. Clarence (Gertrude) Strassman and Mrs. Ray (Evelyn) Hass, both of New Holstein, Mrs. Norman (Eldora) Gutschow of R 2, Kiel, and Mrs. Alfred (Luetta) Wollersheim, R. 1, Manitowoc; three sons, Lester of R. 1, New Holstein, Rueben of Kiel, and Clarence of Woodstock, Ill.; 34 grandchildren and 50 great-grandchildren.
Three sons, two daughters and a brother also preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at St. Peter United Church of Christ in Kiel. The Rev. Vernon Jaberg will officiate and burial will be in the Schleswig Cemetery at Rockville.
