William E. Mathes, aged 74, passed away late Tuesday afternoon after suffering a stroke.
Mr. Mathes was born in the town of Rhine on October 27, 1870, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Mathes. He was married to Miss Martha Suhr of Kiel. The couple made their home on a farm in the town of New Holstein and near Kiel. During the past ten years they have been residents of New Holstein.
Among the survivors are his wife, and the following children: Mrs. Arthur (Lydia) Dedering and Mrs. Clarence (Gertrude) Strassmann of Kiel, Mrs. Norman (Eldora) Gutschow of School Hill, Mrs. Ray (Evelyn) Hass of New Holstein. Miss Luetta Mathes and Clarence Mathes of Woodstock, Illinois, Arwin Mathes of Steinthal, Lester Mathes of New Holstein, and Reuben Mathes of Kiel. Twenty-five grandchildren survive; also a sister, Mrs. George Eichhorn, and a brother, Walter Mathes of New Holstein. Four children preceded him in death, Mrs. Alvin Henschel and Edward Mathes of Kiel, and two died in infancy.
Funeral services will be held at the Meiselwitz funeral home at Kiel, Rev. A. G. Schmid, pastor of St. John's Evangelical and Reformed church will officiate and burial will be made in the Rockville cemetery.
