2 Drivers Killed In Head on Crash Near Winthrop
Two men were killed and two others narrowly escaped death in a rash of accidents on area highways this week. Both drivers in a two-car accident were instantly killed in a near head-on collision on the Winthrop-Fort Jackson Highway at 10:45 p.m. Saturday night, June 22. They were Charles John Empey and Arthur Homer French. Arthur Homer French, 26, Buckton, employed by the Harrison Construction Company on the Seaway project. The body of Mr. French was taken to the family home in Buckton by the Hammill Funeral Service and funeral services were held Tuesday in St. Patrick's Church, Brasher Falls, with burial in the parish cemetery. Mr. French was born Aug. 7, 1930, in Norfolk, a son of Homer and Mae Derochie French. He attended schools in Norfolk and on June 29,1953, he married Miss Lillian O. Page. They were married in St. Patrick's Church, Brasher Falls by the Rev. Dennis Lynch. He spent three years in the army in World War 2, serving in Germany. For the past two years he had worked for the Harrison Construction Company on the St. Lawrence River project as a cement finisher. Surviving are his wife; one daughter, Susanne Marie 21/2; his father, Homer French, Waddington; five brothers, Harvey French, Raymondville; Francis and Melvin French, Massena; Robert French, Waddington and William French, Brookdale; five sister, Mrs. Leonard (Helen) Brothers, Potsdam; Mrs. Donald (Marion) Jackson, Winthrop; Mrs. Wayne (Hattie) Stark, Massena-Winthrop Road; Mrs. Robert (Ida) Shantie, Waddington and Mrs. Everett (Louise) Munson, W. Stockholm. His maternal grandfather, George Derochie, Knapps Station, survives as well as a number of nieces and nephews.
