Mary Scelinda Gunckle, d/o Jacob Phillip and Rose Celestine Poly Shappy, was born in Wabash Township, Darke County, Ohio, 10 Jan 1873, and passed from this life 11 Feb 1941, at the age of 68y 01m 01d.

On 06 Dec 1891, she was united in marriage with John Allen Gunckle. To this union were born 18 children, 12 of whom are living. Three sons and three daughters preceded her in death.

Those living are: Mrs. Irene Youtsey of Washington, D.C.; Mrs. Nora Thornhill of Rossburg; Mrs. Edith Tuttle of Monroe, Michigan; Mrs. Delcia Smith of Dayton; Mrs. Vesta Cunningham of Dawn; Mrs. Geraldine Baumgardner of Greenville; Mrs. Leotina Byers of Arcanum; Mrs. Georgina Ellenberger of Beaverdam; Jennings Gunckel, Gettyburg; Cloyd Gunckle, of Piqua; Harold Gunckel of Bradford; and Earl Gunckle of Greenville.

Most of her life was spent in northern Darke County, where she was reared and educated, also where she and her companion labored together and reared their family. She knew the blessing of a sacrificial motherhood, and counted it a joy to deny herself for her home and family.

In 1911 she dedicated her life to her Saviour and united with the Osgood Christian Church, later attending the churches nearest to her home. She was a charter member of the K.G.E. [Knights of the Golden Eagle?] Lodge of Rossburg.

She was the last of a family of three children. She has written a life of loving service upon the hearts and minds of all who knew her; her jovial spirit and friendly smile will be a lasting memorial to her family and many friends.

She loved and was loved and will be missed by a devoted husband and companion, her eight daughters, four sons, 22 grandchildren, and other dear relatives and many friends.
