William Jennings Gunckle, 77, Route 6, Greenville, Lehman Road, formerly of Route 3, Greenville, Winchester Pike, retired farmer, died in Wayne Hospital, 8:40 a.m. Saturday, after an illness of several years.

He had been living with his sons, Bob and Glenn off and on. He farmed different places in Darke County and in Gettysburg area before coming to the Greenville area.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Darke County, born 13 Oct 1897 near Osgood, son of the late John Allen and Mary Scelanda Shappy Gunckel.

He was a member of the Stelvideo Church of Christ. One infant son, Orville Leroy Gunckle (1919-1920), preceded him in death.

Survivors include three sons, Robert Jennings Gunckle, Route 6, Greenville, Ray Allen Gunckle (1933-2008), Route 4, Greenville, and Glenn Harold Gunckle (1937-1999), Route 1, Arcanum; two daughters, Mrs. Willard (Thelma Mae) Sullenbarger (1921-2003), Route 1, Greenville, and Mrs. Glen (Marjorie Ruth) Cress (1924-1988), West Milton; ten grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harold Gunckel (1913-1977) of Englewood and Earl Gunckle (1915-1986) of Greenville; and five sisters, Mrs. Paul (Delsia) Smith (1903-1992) of Dayton, Mrs. Vesta Cunningham (1906-1981) of Rossburg, Mrs. James (Georgina) McMahon (1914-2008) of Yermo, California, Mrs. Geraldine Baumgardner (1909-2007) of Greenville, and Mrs. Leotina Byers (1912-2006), also of Greenville.

Funeral services will be held in the Miller Funeral Home, Greenville, at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Burial will follow in the Greenville Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 on Monday and on Tuesday at the time of services.
