John Allen "Al" Gunckel, s/o John D. and Cathrine Holloway Gunckel, was born 11 Sep 1867 in Beamsville, Darke County, Ohio, and died on his 75th birthday, 11 Sep 1942, at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Vesta Gunckel Cunningham, in Dawn, Darke County, Ohio, following a lingering illness. His funeral services were held at 1:30 on Monday, 14 Sep 1972, from the Brock Christian Church, with burial in Brock Cemetery, south of that village.

He married Mary Scelanda Shappy, d/o Jacob Phillip and Rose Celestine Poly Shappy, on 06 Dec 1891. She was born in Darke County, Ohio, on 10 Jan 1873, and died 11 Feb 1941, aged 68y 01m 01d, and is buried beside Al in Brock Cemetery.

They are the parents of eighteen children; six of them died in childhood. The family was once known in the area as having "six dead, six married, and six still at home."

Mary Latina Gunckel, born 03 Mar 1892, died in Aug 1892, aged about 5 months. She may be buried in the Weaver-Teacup Cemetery east of North Star, Darke County, Ohio, but there is no stone and no record of her burial there.

Rosa Irene Gunckel, born 08 Apr 1893, died 28 Aug 1972, married Earl Youtsey (10 Feb 1894-03 Oct 1978) on 30 Jun 1915. They lived in Washington, D.C. and also in Tennessee.

Alva Phillip Gunckel, born 24 Nov 1894, died 26 Dec 1894, aged 1 month and 2 days. He may be buried in the Weaver-Teacup Cemetery, but there is no stone and no record of his burial there.

Nora F. Catherine Gunckel, born 17 Nov 1895, died 13 Jul 1955, married Harold Walter "Bill" Thornhill (24 Jul 1894-08 Jul 1959). They are buried in the new section of the Greenville Cemetery in Darke County, Ohio.

William Jennings Gunckle, born 12 Oct 1897, died 08 Mar 1975, aged 77y 03m 27d, married Trixie Medford (07 Mar 1901-05 Nov 1955) on 28 Jun 1918. They are buried in the new section of the Greenville Cemetery. (Jennings changed the spelling of his last name.)

Margaret Ruth Edith Gunckel, born 22 Sep 1899, died 19 Jan 1975, aged 75y 03m 27d; she is buried in the new section of the Greenville Cemetery. Her first marriage was to Augustus Earle Schlegel (born 12 Sep 1896) on 14 Sep 1918, and her second was to Walter V. Tuttle (15 Aug 1899-23 Jul 1973) about the year 1923.

Bernard Cloyd Gunckle, born 29 Sep 1901, died 18 Mar 1965, aged 63y 05m 19d, married Ada Echo Skillman (05 May 1906-02 Sep 1989) on 04 Mar 1925. They are buried in Forest Hill Cemetery in Piqua, Miami County, Ohio. (Cloyd changed the spelling of his last name.)

Dollio Doyle Gunckel, born 02 Jul 1903, died in Aug 1903, aged about 1 month. He may be buried in the Weaver-Teacup Cemetery, but there is no stone and no record of his burial there.

Delsia Zona Gunckel, born 17 Jun 1904, died 23 Dec 1992, aged 88y 06m 06d, married Paul Marion Smith (03 Sep 1904-30 Jun 1977) on 20 Jun 1924. They are buried in the new section of the Greenville Cemetery.

Vesta Belle Etta Gunckel, born 19 Nov 1906, died 05 Jan 1981, aged 74y 01m 17d. She married Ellsworth Cunningham (27 Jul 1907-26 Sep 1928) on 06 Dec 1926 in Lima, Allen County, Ohio. They are buried in the Stelvideo Cemetery in Darke County, Ohio.

Her first marriage was to Melvin Leondus Baumgardner (08 Jul 1908-20 Feb 1974) on 17 Nov 1928, and her second was to Clinton "Buck" Barga (27 May 1919-22 May 1995). She and Melvin are buried in the Greenville Township Memorial Gardens, Darke County, Ohio.

Isola Forest Gunckel, born 15 Apr 1910, died 26 Oct 1912, aged 02y 06m 11d. It is not known where she is buried. She may be buried in the Hoblet-Zerby Cemetery west of Rossburg, Ohio, but no stone or records have been found.

Leo Kenneth Gunckel, born 11 Apr 1911, died 23 Apr 1911, aged 12 days. It is not known where he is buried.

Leotina Mary Louise Gunckel, born 18 Dec 1912, died 11 Feb 2006, aged 93y 01m 24d. She married Charles Willard Byers (05 Jan 1909-31 Mar 1959) in 1932. They are buried in the Abbottsville Cemetery, Darke County, Ohio.

John Harold Gunckel, born 08 Dec 1913, died 15 Apr 1977, aged 63y 04m 07d. His first marriage was to Mildred Sponaugle on 14 Jul 1937, and his second was to Rose Quay on 20 Nov 1963. Harold is buried in Abbottsville Cemetery.

Georgina Augusta Gunckel, born 17 Dec 1914, died 25 Nov 2008, aged 93y 11m 08d. Her first marriage was to William Dwight Ellenberger (1899-1959) on 17 Dec 1934; her second was to William Anthony Amato on 23 Jun 1956; and her third was to James F. McMahon (29 Sep 1907-24 Mar 1980) on 06 Nov 1965. Georgina and Jim are buried in Mountain View Memorial Park in Barstow, San Bernardino County, California.

Lee Earl Gunckel, born 18 Dec 1915, died 21 Oct 1986, aged 70y 10m 03d. His first marriage was to Irene Harter (11 Apr 1917-08 Feb 2001) on 12 Sep 1937, and his second was to Phyllis Maxine Lyme (1931-2012)on 04 Oct 1969. Earl and Maxine are buried in New Harris Creek Cemetery in Bradford, Miami County, Ohio.
