He lived almost his whole life in the vicinity of Lacona and Lucas, Iowa except for one year spent in Colorado. He was well known as a kind husband, a loving father, a dependable friend, and greatly missed by all. This poem is included at the end of his obituary: "A precious one from us has gone, a voice we loved is stilled; a place is vacant in our home that never can be filled; God in His wisdom has recalled the boon his love had given, and though the body slumbers here, the soul is safe in Heaven."
