John L. Brunts was the one of 12 children born to John Brunts, Sr. and his first wife Bathsheba from Kentucky. There were 11 daughters and just one son. As a young boy he was first brought to Howard Co. MO, where his father was a wealthy landowner by 1822. There is a description of his fathers land in Howard Co. MO on his fathers memorial. First wife Bathsheba died in Howard Co. MO, and around 1842 John Brunts, Sr. sold up the farm and holdings in Howard Co. MO and moved over to Platte Co. MO where he remarried in 1849, Mary Jane Heath. It was a 2nd marriage for both of them. (She had been Mrs. Shockley at time of their marriage.)

Son John L. Brunts married in Platte Co. MO 24 July 1848 and can be seen in the 1860 census:
